Dear Friends of Golden Sunbeams
We hope you all started the new year happy, healthy, and with optimism.
Since the solstice on December 21, 2025, the days in the Northern Hemisphere have been getting longer and brighter again – while here at the Cape they are slowly getting shorter.
Even though it is still high summer here and the days are filled with light and heat, shortly after the solstice, on the morning of December 24, 2025, we received very dark and sad news: Our Bright Future Edu-Care Centre in the Asanda-Village township had been partially destroyed by fire.
Since all the children and staff were on their long summer holidays, thankfully no one was injured. Nevertheless, the rooms for the babies and the pre-school children were completely destroyed – a severe shock and a traumatic experience for the principal.
We are all the more grateful that the front part of the building, with three additional classrooms, the kitchen, and the restroom, remained undamaged. Amidst this great loss, these circumstances give us hope and strength for reconstruction and a new beginning.
Nevertheless, we were deeply affected by the devastation and extensive destruction of the two rooms. Golden Sunbeams e.V. had only completed the new extension on September 16, 2019. Two new toilet rooms were also added at that time, creating space for 15 new children.
Our new extension looked so colourful and beautiful back then.
Unfortunately, almost nothing of it is recognisable now.
After overcoming the initial shock, we began assessing the situation on site immediately after the holidays and started the cleanup. Everything that was destroyed or burned was disposed of, and the still usable items were carefully cleared of soot and thoroughly cleaned.
Naturally, the question of the fire’s cause also arose. Most of our schools in the townships are not insured, so it was clear from the beginning that, without our support, the costs for the renovation would have to be borne by the principals alone.
At the same time, it was important for us to understand how a fire with such devastating consequences could have occurred. Unfortunately, in this case, the cause cannot be determined with absolute certainty. However, it is striking that the small refrigerator located in the baby room is missing. Since such an appliance cannot simply vanish without a trace in a fire of this magnitude, it is reasonable to assume that it was stolen and then set on fire to cover up evidence. Even though this ultimately remains a theory, it currently seems to us to be the most plausible explanation.
Between the holidays, we used the time to work together to create a detailed list: What needs to be replaced, what can be salvaged – and what the total costs will be.
And then work began as early as January 8, 2026. First, we started by renewing the roof and rewiring the electrical system.
While we were still cleaning up, Zanele reopened her ECD centre. Since two rooms and two toilets are still missing, the children will have to be cared for temporarily in a smaller space. Fortunately, it is the height of summer, and the outdoor area with sandpit and jungle gym remained undamaged, so many activities can still take place outdoors.
Without private support, most ECD centres in the townships would not be able to repair the damage. There is neither insurance coverage nor significant government support – in a crisis, the principals and their facilities often have to fend for themselves.
We are working hard to ensure that Zanele and her children will soon have full access to all the premises again. An important milestone has already been reached: Bright Future once again has an interior ceiling and functioning lights.
This makes it all the more clear how important fast and unbureaucratic emergency aid from local private organisations is.
