Years of dedication and teamwork at Nomalizo’s EmfundiSweni Kindergarten have truly borne fruit—literally. The digging, planting, and harvesting efforts have resulted in a thriving vegetable garden where healthy, nutritious food is grown. We continue to supply a substantial portion of the plants on a regular basis.
The garden is more than just a source of fresh produce; it offers children meaningful, hands-on experiences with nature. By planting, nurturing, and harvesting vegetables themselves, they learn valuable lessons about sustainability and self-reliance. The garden not only supports a balanced diet for the children but also generates additional income through the sale of surplus produce within the community.
In recognition of its impact, the project was awarded the title of “Best Township Vegetable Garden in South Africa” by the government in 2014.
When a major fire swept through parts of the Helderberg Nature Reserve in June 2022—followed by heavy rains that severely affected many township homes—we knew it was time to act. After 20 years, we made the decision to completely replace the roof of EmfundiSweni Kindergarten (as shared in our June newsletter #40).
This major renovation included new electrical wiring, lighting, ceilings, insulation, and gutters—essential upgrades that came with such a large roof replacement. And as a special surprise for Nomalizo, we also installed a brand-new kitchen! This long-overdue improvement was finally possible, as the leaky roof—especially problematic in the kitchen area—had often allowed rainwater to pour in.
